An outfit of almosts: Burgundy and purple ETA another option

Today is our anniversary date. We're going to the Museum of Nebraska Art and then out for Italian for dinner. Casual, but I want to look nice.

I had the idea of wearing this top (just a titch too warm in color for me, but I think it works, and I wish it was natural fibers, but it has worked for the occasional wear), and since it's fitted I opted for the loose jeans, which require the belt.

I tried the top out and faux tucked.

I put in amethyst and gold studs (not that they show with my hair); my amethyst ring didn't fit on my right hand, so I stacked it on my left hand.

The pendant would be a good fit, except the length is completely wrong.

The shawlette would be nice, but I'm not one of those people who need to cover up for a/c, which makes it too warm for today's 90° (32°C).

(I'll do my face, but we're not leaving until after lunch, so I'll do that later.)

I'm tempted to just start over, but I don't have another idea. I wish one of my sari silk wrap skirts had arrived. Alas.

Suggestions?

Someday my closet will work for me. How long will it take, do you think?

I think it's a beautiful colour for you! And I love the ring.

Will the jeans be too warm in that heat? I always find denim really warm, but perhaps not in the AC?

I hope you have a wonderful anniversary celebration!

Thanks! The jeans will be warm, but I tend to live in jeans and just deal. At some point I'll have other options, but right now ... they're basically it. And we will be in air conditioning most if not all the time.

Do you have any of those coil free safety pins that you use as stitch markers? They also make great temporary necklace shorteners. ;) I'm sure a regular safety pin could work too, especially since your hair's down. I really like the first outfit, with the semi tuck and belt; in the photo that colour looks really flattering on you! If you do want to wear a skirt, though, the top looks short enough to work untucked. Or do you not having any skirts in your closet at the moment? If you can shorten the necklace, I think that first photo shows a beautiful and flattering outfit.

Honestly, I think a lot of the forum members struggle most with summer dressing, so I bet when it cools off you'll enjoy your closet more! I empathise with your frustration though. I want to say mine took a year or two to whip into functioning shape, but I was thrifting as a weekly/every other week hobby at the time. And then I joined the forum and learned I needed to be far fussier about fit than I'd ever been before! Lol I'm still trying to learn that lesson, sigh.

I do have a few of those stitch markers, yes. :) I'll try that, thanks. And yeah, no skirts right now. Waiting, waiting, impatiently. I just had another idea ... how does this long skinny scarf compare to the necklace?

    I know I'm impatient, sigh. :)

Hmmm. I like the colour play w the narrow scarf, but I think it's a little too long tied that way, with the proportions of this outfit at least. Maybe play with different ways to tie it?

I understand your impatience! I hope the skirts arrive soon. :)

    Happy Anniversary!

Don't be so hard on yourself! You look lovely. That's a gorgeous colour for you, and I'm in love with that ring!

  • Word Lily replied 9 years ago

I think you're right about the proportions, E. Thanks for confirming. The stone in the center of the cross is purple, too, so I'm not completely losing that color play.

Heh, Maneera. Thank you! I'm very good at being hard on myself. I can see the vision in my head, but it's going to take me awhile to actually get there.

I like the necklace best, then the long scarf. The purple shirt is pretty on you.

It will most likely take a couple years to build your wardrobe. It's tempting to try to rush through it. It's a process, and does involve some trial and error.

I vote for the necklace, shortened with E's hack. The purple is a great color on you and I love the shape of that top. I prefer it untucked (I always find that more comfortable, as well.) It's fun to see your little photo-bomber too!

I feel your pain on the closet thing. I would really like to wave a magic wand and have the perfect wardrobe right now. I'd also like to have the perfect body on which to hang the clothes I love best. Alas, life doesn't work that way. I think we're facing some of the same challenges (losing weight, changing body, defining style, matching clothing to lifestyle) so I'll be cheering you on while I go through it too.

Thank you, Jenn! Yes, I'm enjoying your journey as we find our way together, too!

I agree with the others.  Great color on you and use the necklace with the shortening trick.

I've been working on my closet for almost 2 years and I have a long way to go, but I am starting to understand so much more about who I am, what I want, what I need, how to get there, what the heck boyfriend jeans are, color, fit, etc.  Like anything worth doing, it is a long process, and a lot of it has to do with the journey and not necessarily the outcome.

I like the semi tuck. Gorgeous colour on you. Nice with the cross necklace in #3 - that's a great length actually.

    And you have lovely hair.
