Skinnies?

Another questionable pair of jeans I got on my latest shopping trip. I've never worn skinnies before. I'm clueless.

Question 1: Do they fit? How do they look? Since I've never worn them, I have no idea what criteria to go by.

Question 2: Are they me? Do I care if they fit? Maybe I'm so firmly entrenched in bootcuts (and flares, and sometimes wide leg) land that I can safely continue avoiding this silhouette.

These look like a fantastic classic skinny fit to me. I find this style very versatile...

  • lyn67 replied 8 years ago

I am not an expert, as only have one pair myself:-), but think they fit quite well! Good job on  styling them!

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

So you're saying I've just been obstinate all these years, avoiding them? ;)

  • Janet replied 8 years ago

From what I can see, they look like they fit just like skinnies should!

I was similarly skeptical about skinnies when I first tried them a few years ago. I carry all my weight in the hips and thighs, so I was pretty convinced I could not wear them. But once my eye adjusted, I decided to wear and enjoy them. Even though they are not typically as flattering on me as bootcuts, I like having the variety in cuts and silhouettes, and I love being able to tuck them into tall boots and to not worry about hem length (so many jeans are too short on me!).

You are wearing them well here --I also like them tucked into cowboy boots, and the top works well with them. I like the simple dark wash too.

    I love those glasses too!

How do YOU feel in them? If you're used to bootcuts and wide legs, I imagine the fitted style is probably going to take some getting used to. But, from these photos, it looks like they fit nicely.

I can totally picture these being a staple in your wardrobe as you move towards a slightly edgier look. Picture these tucked into some Doc Martens with a patterned top and a leather jacket. I think it'd be great :) But ultimately you have to decide how you feel.

I think I'd like to see this look with a different top. With my skinnies, I like to either go with a fitted or structured top, or something loose and blousy partially tucked to balance out the look. Just my two cents. I live in skinny jeans and pants, so I may be biased!

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

These fit "body con". Which is a look - and they fit well if that's what you are after. Make sure you like the uniform wash.

You can also get skinnies that look less like jeggings and more like jeans. See below. Do you like the patchwork jeans, Work Lilly?

  • Diana replied 8 years ago

They look great to me. I resisted skinnies at first too but came around once I realized how well they work with boots. I REALLY like boots.

  • Jenn replied 8 years ago

I like them, but think they might work better with a longer top... just another inch or two would help.

  • Alassë replied 8 years ago

    Looks like they fit well!

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

Angie: They are pretty body-con, yes. Which is partly why I don't see myself pairing them with anything but boots and long loose tops, at least right now. As my weight continues to drop, though, theoretically they'll fit a bit looser, which gives them more longevity in my closet than if they were loose now. The patchwork ones ... I don't know. My first thought is they're just too haphazard for me. I think the flatness of the wash is helping ease me into the silhouette; more flattering.

Stephanie: I don't think I'll be pairing them with a structured (or tucked, horror!) top any time soon. Yikes.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

I like the whole outfit! It's sleek and I enjoy the bookending of your boots and hair.

  • Stephanie replied 8 years ago

Just had to throw it out there...I am a partial tuck-a-holic :) I agree with Jenn then...try a slightly longer top with these. I forgot to mention that I really like them paired with the cowboy boots too!

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

Janet: Thanks for the commiseration! I really (finally) like these glasses, too.

Stephanie: I don’t know how I feel in them yet, which is why I posted it as a question. It’s sooooo far from my normal that I can’t tell! It just feels weird so far. Sorry if my first reply was overly harsh. I’m not confident enough to pull off a shorter top with these, at least not right now.

Diana: Thanks. Yeah, I like boots, too.

Jenn: I agree. I think this is the longest I’ve got right now, though. However, it’s cotton and has a tendency to grow over the course of the day. It might be a full inch or two longer by afternoon! I’m curious to see how the pants change over the course of the day, too.

    Suz: Thanks!

  • JAileen replied 8 years ago

It's funny, I can see them on others but not on me. I think they fit you well. I love your boots.

  • replied 8 years ago

Yep - I agree with Suz, and others. They look great on you, fit you well, and look good tucked into your boots. I am the opposite of you - lol. I wear nothing BUT skinnies!  Can't get myself into boot cuts but just might try today:)

  • Carole replied 8 years ago

These look great! Thumbs up from this skinny jean fan!

  • Stephanie replied 8 years ago

I totally get it! I have been wearing skinny jeans for years and am so used to them now. I actually have the same problem as you but flip flopped - I am so comfortable in skinny jeans that I feel weird in boot cuts and flares. You weren't harsh at all, I am still trying to learn what other members like/don't like :) I say keep em around for a few days and try styling them with different tops/things you already have. They look great on you!

  • replied 8 years ago

If you're a boot girl, you've got to have these!  They look great on you.

  • amiable replied 8 years ago

Yes - I still like them - especially with the long sweater and boots.  It's a departure from your usual, and I know you crave less variety than I do, but I think it looks great on you.

  • Maneera replied 8 years ago

I really really like them! This is EXACTLY how they should fit!

I love your outfit because the boots are so damn great with these jeans. I don't think they look like jeggings at all. And I also don't think you need a longer top-----this length looks pretty damn good because of the asymmetrical hem.

Oh do try your black hand knit top next!!! Yay!! I think these jeans flatter you MORE than you think. I like them ALOT. you look slimmer and very effortlessly styled here.

ETA: The simple dark wash is especially great because I find it to be more versatile and more slimming.

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

It is funny, isn’t it, JAileen? Thanks.

LisaP: Sometimes I think I’m just contrary. Skipping whatever the big thing is, just because it’s big.

    Carole: Thank you!

LavenderMoon: I’m a boot girl, but this is currently my only pair of boots. Sigh. Still planning to add another pair this fall, though.

Amiable: It’s weird. The shirt issue (I still want it to be longer, but I don’t have anything longer right now) is making me want to walk away. How much work is required to pull off a new silhouette? I start looking at tunic patterns. Try on a holding zone tunic that I’ve held on to for years while it was too small. (It fits!) Think how much better I’d like it with bootcuts or flares. …

Maneera: Thank you! This top doesn’t actually have an asymmetrical hem, but the burgundy one does. This one’s longer in the middle though. I agree about the wash of these, though, for sure.

  • donnat replied 8 years ago

Those skinnies look great on you.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 8 years ago

They look great to me. I like this top with them, because it shows more of your leg than a longer tunic would. It seems a very nicely balanced silhouette, with the boots grounding the whole look.  I took a while to get used to skinnies, too. I wear them a lot more than my bootcuts now, though, because they are easier to wear in wet weather, with the hems off the ground!

  • amiable replied 8 years ago

They look good with this length top, but I understand you wanting it to be longer too.  I really wanted longer tops with my skinnies at first.  I guess in some ways I still do....

Longer tops are tricky to fit too, aren't they?  (I was thinking that they shouldn't be hard to thrift, but they are hard enough to fit that I bet they would be).

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

    Thanks, Donnat and Firecracker!

Yes, Amy, tunics are hard to fit for me, just like dresses, since I'm not the same size on top and bottom. Plus, since my torso is long? They're not going to be longer than this if they're bought off the rack, I don't think. Unless it's supposed to be a dress.

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 8 years ago

I am late to the party but wanted to chime in anyway.  If you are newly adopting the skinny jean then a dark uniform color is a great way to ease into it.  I am like Janet in that I resisted skinny jeans because I felt they would showcase my thigh issues.  I came to the realization last year that my preferred way to wear skinnies is tucked into a sturdier boot.  The visual weight of the boot balances out the hip/thigh area.

If you happen to be a size 8.5 or so, PM me.  I might be able to send you a few pairs of boots that are in good shape and are embarrassing me by sitting in the closet unused.

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

I'm glad you did, Cheryle! You're not late at all! And yes, I can't see myself wearing them without boots. Aw, that's so nice of you, to offer! I'm a 9 or 9.5 usually, though.

  • Tania replied 8 years ago

Folks have already chimed in, but I think these look great on you.

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

    Thanks, Tania!

  • replied 8 years ago

I think you look FANTASTIC in these! They're very flattering. And you have great boots and chunky knits really pull off the look well.

  • Brooklyn replied 8 years ago

I think they look great on you too. A longer top can help you get more comfy with the whole skinnies thing but the one you are wearing works well too.

  • Bijou replied 8 years ago

I can understand your concern.  I have only one pair of skinnies and it has taken a while for me to really embrace the fit.  As I am a boot girl too, tucked into boots is how I like to wear them.  Skinnies are so handy if you live in a wet / snowy area, as the ability to tuck into boots is also a bonus.  My skinnies are super comfortable because of the stretch in them and it is probably the comfort and ease of tucking into boots that have made them real workhorses for me.

  • Summer replied 8 years ago

I think they look really good on you, WordLily.  I have fought shy of skinnies so far, but, as with JAileen, I like them on others.  I'll have to take the plunge, I think!

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

    Makes sense., WL.

FWIW, I think a lighter pair of skinnies will work better with the boots because they create a low contrast against them.

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

Good point, Angie. I'm really wanting (and not finding, so far) a lighter pair of jeans! I got a pair of mid-wash, but that's the closest I've found so far, and I'm really missing the variety. (Well. I also found an off-white pair, which works for some of the original purpose of light-wash jeans, but maybe not all, feel wise.) I'm assuming my next pair of boots will be darker than these, though.
